Since '97 I have been doing "multi-media" or "text-based" illustration, mostly for the New York Times. Either I'll write text and collaborate with a designer, or take a photograph, or a combination of both. At one point I was doing so many of these - along with my friend Nicholas Blechman - that we were obliged to use assume a pseudonym: Johnny Sweetwater. We got the name from a tavern in Williamsburg where we did a lot of our "thinking". You will see it on a couple of the images in this gallery which were selected from a much larger mass of work, often done with turnarounds of a matter of hours. These are scans from the actual published pages because context for this kind of stuff is everything. I also wrote brief descriptions below the enlarged images which might help. I have been doing far less of this since moving to LA - too far, it seems, from Sweetwater Tavern ...
